About Gordan Evans van Hook
With a unique blend of defense and commercial maritime experience, Gordan is currently the owner and sole proprietor of Maritime Insights, LLC where he provide consulting services on commercial and defense maritime issues, innovation and best practices. He has worked recently as the US and Americas country agent for Odense Maritime Technology (OMT), North America. OMT is the former Odense Steel Shipbuilding, Maersk Line\'s shipbuilder for over 50 years and now spun off as a private company. Gordan assisted OMT to establish a footprint in the US and Canada as a designer of commercial and military ships, and as specialists in state-of-the-art shipyard efficiency. Gordan previously transitioned from Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) where he was Senior Director for Ship Management and Chartering 20••••15, responsible for four product tankers and two heavy lift multipurpose vessels. Before 2012, he served for four years as MLL\'s Senior Director for Innovation and Concept Development, assisting US government agencies in understanding commercial maritime innovation in energy efficiency and maritime security issues and concerns. In 2009, he led the Maersk crisis action team in Mombasa, Kenya, for the Maersk Alabama incident. A retired US Navy surface warfare officer, Gordan holds a BS from Texas A&M University, an MS in Information Systems from Naval Postgraduate School, and and MA in National Security Strategy from the Naval War College In the Navy, Capt Van Hook served in various destroyers and frigates and sttaffs. He was Chief Engineer in USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS (FFG-58) when she struck a mine in the Persian Gulf in 1988, and he was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat “V” for his actions to save the ship. He commanded USS O’BANNON (DD-987) and served as operations officer for the Fifth Fleet to launch Operation Enduring Freedom after 9/11. He also commanded DESTROYER SQUADRON 23, and served as Sea Combat Commander for NIMITZ (CVN-68) Strike Group. He served on the CNO\'s Strategic Studies Group and as Executive Director of the CNO Executive Panel.
