ABOUT GOLAM RABBANI

I am a transnational educator, researcher, and a settler immigrant with over sixteen years of experience in university-level teaching and research, intersecting cultural and creative industries, ethnomusicology, literary studies, immigration, and social justice. Currently, I teach at the School of Creative Industries at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University). My prior academic appointments include the Dan School of Drama and Music at Queen’s University, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the School for Studies in Arts and Culture at Carleton University, and the Department of English at Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh.My interdisciplinary and community-based research integrates Western and non-Western creative industries, economic ethnomusicology, performance and media studies, and EDI frameworks. I have secured multiple research grants to explore how creative practices—in particular those of marginalized communities such as South Asian newcomers, refugees, and children—function as catalysts for wellbeing, resistance, and economic empowerment. A key dimension of my work examines non-Western literary and cultural folk practices, investigating their applicability in North American organizational and community contexts. I also critically analyze the intersections between folk industries, subcultures, and commercial interests, thereby illuminating how profit-driven imperatives shape contemporary cultural production.As an amateur writer and performer trained in Baul and Bengali folk music as well as Indian classical traditions, I bring both scholarly rigor and practical engagement to my teaching and research. Through this multifaceted approach, I aim to foster a more inclusive understanding of creative industries that amplifies underrepresented voices, encourages cross-cultural exchange, and reimagines the potential of global cultural practices in addressing today’s social and economic challenges.
