About Grace MacKey

Hello! I am an English and Journalism student at Palm Beach Atlantic University, and if there is anything I have learned in the past few years, it is that I love a good story. By studying all kinds of literature, I have learned the power of storytelling. As an English and Honors student, I have read a range of authors from various historical contexts, belief systems, and cultures. This has been a wonderful way for me to learn about the world. Yet stories are not just found in books! They are all around us, in our communities, our neighborhoods, our families, and in ourselves. A highlight of my life in West Palm Beach has been working as a reporter and editor at The Beacon Today, Palm Beach Atlantic\'s news publication. Here, I realized just how much I love getting to know my community (and others noticed too! I was kindly titled \"Most likely to reach out and uplift the community\" by my Beacon Editor-in-Chief). By looking to tell stories about where I lived, I had a new lens on the world around me and discovered a new appreciation for not just the stories we tell, but the way we tell them. I wanted to give people information that mattered in a way they would understand. I continued to develop this passion as an intern at The Policy Circle, where I supported their mission to support positive civil discourse and government involvement, particularly among women, throughout the country. I developed the ability to write about complex topics with clarity which really matters when you are trying to reach a wide audience. I brought these skills with me to Oxford, where I studied abroad under Oxford University professors and was challenged in how I write, research, and analyze. During my semester abroad, I really learned how to research and form an argument. This required a higher level of analysis and clarity than I had ever used before in my writing, but I have been changed for the better. I conducted a semester-long research project where I studied the influence of early journalism and political propaganda on the public. I have never felt so proud of a piece of work. Oxford left me confident in my ability to research and write with intention. Currently, I am pursuing more ways to produce written, digital, and visual content that tells a story for The Beacon Today, the University of Oxford\'s creative journal,\"Through a Glass Darkly,\" and PBA\'s creative journal,\"Living Waters Review.\" I hope to continue to develop my ability to tell stories with various forms of content for publications and businesses. Please reach out if you have any questions for me!
