About Gloria Walton
Described as one of the country’s most exciting “next generation” political leaders, Gloria Walton is committed to creating equitable climate solutions that center the people closest to the problems. Gloria is an award-winning organizer, writer, and the President and CEO of The Solutions Project. She joins the organization from Strategic Concepts in Organizing and Policy Education (SCOPE), where she was President + CEO for 10 years. At SCOPE, she started her journey with The Solutions Project as an inaugural grantee and joined the board in 2017 to help create a vision that is radically-inclusive and culture-led. The Solutions Project is a nonprofit that promotes climate justice through grantmaking and amplifying the stories of frontline community leaders in media. The Solutions Project has accelerated the transition to 100 percent clean, renewable energy — wind, water, and solar — for all people and purposes. The organization invests 95 percent of its resources in frontline leadership of color, with a focus on women-led organizations. Since Mark Ruffalo co-founded the organization in 2013, it has achieved a nationwide movement for 100 percent renewable energy in which 1 in 3 people in the U.S. live in a place already committed to 100 percent. During her time at SCOPE, a South LA-based community organization, Gloria played a pivotal role in several significant ballot measures and policy campaigns that increase community decision-making and ensure equitable investment in green jobs, climate solutions, and critical public services. This includes serving as the anchor organization to win statewide alliance efforts to pass California’s Proposition 30, which increased taxes for upper income earners and restored $6 billion in education funding, and Proposition 47, which reduced non-violent crimes from felonies to misdemeanors and putting the cost savings into rehabilitation, social programs, and mental health services. Ms. Walton also led the organizing effort for SCOPE’s green jobs programs that coupled entry-level positions with job training to create career pathways into good, green jobs targeted for workers in low-income neighborhoods.
