As an inquisitive new scientist, I once questioned my PI\'s basic assumptions on treatment. I was too young to know that you probably shouldn\'t question the chief of the ICU, but he pointed me to the supply room and I engineered a prototype treatment. For more than a year, helped patients one by one, fine tuning and optimizing. Together we changed the course of treatment and improved the lives of thousands of patients. That treatment is expected to see $2.5 billion in annual sales by 2030. It took a few years for me to understand the lessons learned about the power of trust, humility, and kindness.After receiving my PhD, my first science job was to set up the first and only protein crystallography lab in the state of Hawaii. Overlooking Pearl Harbor, we used protein structure to guide design of anthrax and botulinum toxin treatments for biodefense. I learned to work with other groups within the company to streamline grant writing and received $1 million in funding. I was the only scientist in a room of executives and directors in the research steering committee, which was tasked with guiding the company\'s future. I often had to translate science into English for the business side, but it was rewarding to be that bridge. As we failed IPO, I quickly learned that there was more to biotech than just the science. I took it upon my self to get educated and received my MBA a few years later. I will forever be a tinkerer, especially when I think things can be better. Even as part of a large company, it is exciting to see ideas implemented and helping people succeed. I still question things we take for granted and look forward to the next time I can work toward helping improve people\'s lives, even if it is by helping one of my customers.
