About Giuseppe Raviola

I serve as a clinician and program leader with expertise in mental health care delivery in the US and global contexts. I am committed to clinical excellence and the innovation needed to promote mental health care in all contexts by incorporating sustained mental health services into emerging health care systems and other sectors. My training and practice as an adult, child and adolescent psychiatrist have enabled me to develop foundational skills as a therapist for adults, children and families, as a consultant to medical teams in hospitals and schools, and as an effective clinical expert in the community who can navigate complex systems of care, rural and urban. For two decades this has informed my expertise as a program development specialist working for the international health care delivery organization Partners In Health in support of ten country teams who are actively delivering care for complex, co-morbid conditions at the front line. The cross-site team I lead practices an effective transnational consultation model established on four pillars: sustained clinical supervision and mentorship to local providers; program implementation support and guidance to local managers; nimble use of quality improvement methods, data collection systems and technology integrated within local systems; and targeted research support to answer critical questions related to locally determined service delivery goals. In 2024 our teams delivered mental health care to more than people across ten countries. With regard to training and education, I have created a fellowship in global mental health delivery at Harvard Medical School, have developed a new hospital program in quality improvement in child psychiatry at Boston Children\'s Hospital, and have contributed to creating a new Community and Global Psychiatry Program at MGH and McLean Hospital. I have supervised trainees at Harvard-affiliated hospitals in psychotherapy, developed a new psychiatry residency training program in Sierra Leone at the oldest psychiatric hospital in sub-Saharan Africa, and currently serve as interim chair of Psychiatry at the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda. In the US I co-lead several courses in history and global mental health at Harvard University.My professional and personal experiences have therefore provided me with a unique set of skills and the ability to impact problems related to clinical mental health concerns, public health and global health, as well as to prepare the next generation to meet the challenge of mental health care delivery in the future.
