ABOUT GIUSEPPE PITARRESI

I have more than ten years experience in teaching and performing research as a permanent research fellow at the University of Palermo (Italy). My research interests comprise two main areas. The first area relates to: » Mechanical modelling and characterization of Polymer Matrix Composite and Structural Polymer materials and structures. In this field I have a consolidated experience in the implementation of experimental characterization techniques to determine the mechanical behavior of materials and structures. My know-how spans from knowledge of mechanical testing facilities to manufacturing techniques for the production of polymer matrix composites. Special expertise has been gained in the Fracture Toughness evaluation of Polymer based materials and the development of new lightweight composite materials for the transport sectors. The second area regards: » Development and Implementation of Experimental Techniques for Stress Analysis and Structural Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) of materials and structures. Know-how in this field comprises knowledge of Electrical Strain Gauges, Optical Techniques (Photoelasticity, Digital Image Correlation, Speckle and Moirè interferometric techniques), Thermal Methods (Thermoelastic Stress Analysis, Lock-In Thermography, Pulsed Thermography). Special expertise has been gained in the implementation of thermal methods for structural assessment, with customized signal processing techniques for deriving the thermoelastic signal and for finding lock-in phase based defect signatures. I also have a long-standing record of teaching experiences to bachelor and post-grad master degree level classes. In particular I have lectured classes on: Mechanics of Materials; Experimental Stress Analysis; Composite Materials.
