ABOUT GIOVANNI PETRI

I develop mathematical frameworks for understanding how collective behavior emerges from complex interactions—in brains, in social systems, and across species.Currently leading two major research programs: RUNES (€1.5M ERC Consolidator Grant) on reconstructing neural and ecological systems, and serving as Network Science Lead for Project CETI, the Audacious-funded initiative to decode sperm whale communication.Recent highlights include discovering how the brain\'s topological structure limits parallel processing (Nature Physics 2021, ICLR 2026), developing higher-order Laplacian renormalization methods (Nature Physics 2023, 2025), and demonstrating social learning across symbolic barriers in non-human cultures (eLife, Science). My work spans:• Topological neuroscience — using algebraic topology to decode brain states and consciousness• Higher-order network theory — formalizing group interactions beyond pairwise connections• Cross-species intelligence — from zebrafish social learning to whale communication systems• AI architecture limits — understanding the fundamental constraints on neural network computationI\'m a 2025 Museum of Science Boston Science Communication Fellow, and author of \"Higher-Order Systems\"(Springer, 2022).Through Völrun (volrun.org), I advise organizations on complex systems, network science, and topological methods. Open to: Strategic advisory roles, speaking engagements, research collaborations
