About Gini Besant
I received a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Mahatma Gandhi University, India in 2008, studied the medical benefits of cyanobacterial species, specifically analyzing their efficacy in the treatment of liver and kidney damage. Following the completion of my Ph.D, I conducted postdoctoral research at the Indian Institute of Science and eventually earned the title of principal investigator. My research is of great importance as it focuses mainly on finding new therapeutic molecules for cancer and liver ailments. Subsequently, I moved to the University of Chicago, research was clarifying how the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of neurons influence Alzheimer’s disease development. I have secured a position with MicroMGx, Chicago and my interests are focused on the discovery of natural products by large-scale correlation of gene clusters with metabolites called metabologenomics, which leads to the structure-based discovery of natural products. I am also interested in some of the most recent strategies to activate silent biosynthetic gene clusters and to elucidate of their corresponding products and pathways.
