About Gingher Leyendecker

I have been residential faculty at Mesa Community College since 2004 and served as the Chair of the Art Department from 2016 to 2025. Our department offers degrees in Fine Art and Digital Art including Animation, Illustration, Graphic Design, and Digital Photography. I teach beginning and advanced Life Drawing and Art Anatomy, and have also taught figure and portrait painting. In my classes I stress skill development including anatomy, proportion, structure, mass, line quality, and composition. Students learn specific techniques in charcoal, conte, and pastel as they pertain to the human form. As a teacher I believe that my job is to assist students in developing the skills necessary to get their conceptual ideas into their artwork. I strive to assist my students in receiving scholarships to continue their education, whether it be at a state university or a prestigious art school, or to help them get into galleries and exhibitions. I enjoy working with students in both traditional and digital fine arts. In the Art Department, we strive to build strong connections between disciplines, departments on campus, within our community, and with art programs in our state and nationwide. To assist my life drawing and art anatomy students, I created a series of art anatomy videos entitled \"Dynamics of Art Anatomy,\" that are designed for beginning to professional figurative artists. They are based on lessons given in the classroom on anatomy, proportion, structure, mass and line quality. We explore figures and portraits with short and long poses using various models. The videos help students with their technique and understanding of the human form.(See video and links below)A paraglider pilot since 2007 with a P4 rating, I was also president of the Arizona Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association from 20••••17. As a musician, I play banjo, guitar, and bass, and sing and play for a local Phoenix band.
