About Gilbert Valverde
I am an internationally recognized scholar and leader in higher education, committed to empirical methods in social science and collegial, transparent, data informed leadership. I currently am Vice-Provost for Global Strategy and Dean of International Education. In this role I lead the Center for International Education and Global Strategy and oversee the major strands of the University at Albany internationalization portfolio. This includes international student recruitment and admissions; international student and scholar immigration and support services; intensive English language programs and conditional admissions; promotion, development, and management of international partnerships; on-campus global learning opportunities; study abroad and global gateway/global presence initiatives. I have also served as Chair of the Department of Educational Policy and Leadership where I have been a faculty member since 1998. My scholarship in the field of Comparative and International Education focusses on the political economy of higher education internationalization; metrics, evaluation, standards, and measurement in evidence-driven education policy and leadership; and STEM education policy from primary through post-secondary education. I am Past-President of the Comparative and International Education Society, which is the oldest and largest scholarly society in its field in the world. I am a recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service. I continue to be active as a senior advisor and policy analyst. I have worked in this capacity for NASA, the World Bank, the Interamerican Development Bank, the United States Agency for International Development, the United Nations Development Programme, and for universities, ministries of education, evaluation and testing agencies, and think tanks throughout the Americas and around the globe. Expertise: Evidence-driven decision making, policy analysis, data analysis, empirical research and evaluation methods, curriculum and standards, educational measurement, program evaluation, international large-scale tests and standards, educational rankings.
