Gilbert A. Palmer is a Senior Healthcare & Physician Executive whose patient-centric, physician-focused leadership strengthens clinical outcomes and improves operational performance at community hospitals. Since 2009, he has worked concurrently in clinical and executive roles for Mercy Health Lorain, a two-hospital system in northeastern Ohio, and NES Health, a medical staffing company that provides emergency and hospitalist medicine services to healthcare organizations worldwide. Gilbert is board-certified in both family and emergency medicine. His expertise lies in the full range of C-suite healthcare leadership—from financial stewardship and service line development to quality enhancement, physician recruitment and community engagement. In 2022, Gilbert assumed the role of President of Mercy Health, Lorain Hospital. This, after a term as Chief Clinical Officer for the region. He works closely with his senior executive team shaping policy, clinical practice, operations and financial stewardship for the organization. Just prior to being elevated to President, he served in the Chief Clinical Officer position, preceded as both Chief Medical Officer for Mercy Health as well as the Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Mercy Health Lorain and Mercy Allen Hospitals. His accomplishments include astounding fiscal growth during the pandemic, remarkable market share gains in multiple service lines, developing a Level 3 trauma center, decreasing door to tPA time for stroke patients from more than an hour to routinely under 30 minutes, and driving ED patient experience scores from the bottom to top decile. While at NES Health, Gilbert designed and implemented a national hospitalist medicine program that launched in 2018 with contracts worth $20M annually. As Regional Medical Director for NES Health, Gilbert also managed $32M in annual contracts with eight healthcare organizations in four states. He has recruited more than 200 physicians across his career and retained more than 80% of those under his personal supervision for a decade.
