Sternson Lab - Neurosciences Dept Breeding/Colony Management: selecting high performing breeders at appropriate breeding age for over 20 strains (mostly transgenic Cre lines, including strains created at HHMI Janelia Research Campus and through cross breeding), genotyping all mice through Transnetyx, selecting mice for procedures, executing timed mating, and general husbandry (e.g, general health observations, post-op physiological monitoring, cage changes, food and/or water restriction, animal transfers, and surgery prep). In Vivo/Ex Vivo/In Vitro: performing survival cranial surgeries by injecting virus and/or implants in various parts of the brain, monitoring mice physiology to administer anesthesia and analgesia at the appropriate dose during and after surgery, performing cardiac perfusions, and sectioning tissue using the vibratome or cryostat. I train all incoming personnel with any in vivo techniques related to their job function, routinely present during lab meetings on animal welfare, inform and keep all lab members updated on HHMI and UCSD business practices and company policies, lab SOP’s, and IACUC/ACP, The Guide, and regulations, ensure compliance to animal welfare, and manage current and archived protocols, surgery records, post-op monitoring logs, personnel animal training, and equipment use.
