About Gerard Francisco
Dr. Francisco is one of the nation’s leading physicians in the field of brain injury and stroke rehabilitation and spasticity management. A frequent lecturer nationally and internationally, he is currently conducting research on the use of botulinum toxins and intrathecal baclofen for the treatment of spasticity, and the use of robots and neuromodulation devices to facilitate motor recovery after a stroke or spinal cord injury. Dr. Francisco is a co-principal investigator of an R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health. His research is conducted within the NeuroRecovery Research Center at TIRR Memorial Hermann, of which he is the founding director.Dr. Francisco is chairman and professor (with tenure) in the department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM & R) at UTHealth McGovern Medical School. He serves as editor-in-chief of the Journal of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr. Francisco was honored as the Distinguished Member of the American Academy of PM & R in 2015 and the Sidney Licht Award lecturer by the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in 2016. Prior to that he was named Distinguished Professor by University of Texas Systems in 2013. Dr. Francisco is serving a second-term as a director of the American Board of PM & R, where he chairs the Brain Injury Medicine examination committee. He is immediate past president of the Association of Academic Physiatrists and immediate past-chair of the review committee for PM & R of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
