ABOUT GERALYN L. MORRELL

I work within many different areas of social work and higher education. I have presented on topics for Mental Health and Self-Care, Academic Success, Stress Management and Self-Care, Parenting Skills Training, Conflict Resolution, Substance Abuse and It’s Effects, Management Etiquette, Effective Communication Skills and Methods, Teen Awareness, Feelings and Anger, Stress and Depression, Parenting Styles, Discipline, Boundaries, Effective Communication and the Family Unit, Change in the Elderly Population, Needs of the Aging population, Technology in Higher Education, Personality Styles and Community Awareness. I teach various courses and present at workshops in the higher education sector inclusive of communication, sociology, psychology and behavioral science.I work with a program through LSUHSC (Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center) called the PAY Check program. The program is a Postsecondary Apprenticeship for Youth which is an innovative collaboration over a three semester transition between LSU HDC (LSU Human Development Center), LRS (Louisiana Rehabilitation Services), public school systems, and employers in the New Orleans metro area. PAY Check prepares selected youth with disabilities who are eligible for LRS services age 18-22 years to acquire, practice and become competent in a wide range of Post-secondary, community and employment environments and settings to include Delgado Community College, the University Medical Center-New Orleans and the surrounding community. PAY Check is a first of its kind program in the entire U.S, and quite possibly the world. Participating youth are recruited from partner public high schools and maintain a “concurrent enrollment” status. This arrangement allows for public high schools to collaborate with PAY Check staff to support participants to continue to address IEP or Section 504 Plan goals and to pursue an alternate path to high school diplomas. I am also the coordinator of The Irma Thomas Center assisting those in need of academic and/or social services and present workshops with community partners. Additionally, I am an educational forum leader with the PTK honors chapter and SGA Advisor.**Seymour Weiss Excellence in Teaching Award Recipient 2023.
