ABOUT GEORGIOS SPITHOURAKIS

Machine Learning Scientist with hands-on experience in big tech, academia, and startups. Expertise in neural networks, deep learning, and conversational AI, with a track record of deploying state-of-the-art spoken dialogue systems. Passionate about integrating NLP, ML, and software engineering to create innovative AI solutions. An active researcher with multiple publications, patents, and contributions to top-tier conferences. Recognized for persistence and creativity in tackling high-impact problems-I hold a PhD in Computer Science at University College London (UCL), supervised by Dr. Sebastian Riedel. I am interested in natural language processing, computational linguistics, and machine learning.I have 4 years experience as Machine Learning Engineer/Scientist at PolyAI, building conversational AI for automating customer support. I have interned at Microsoft Research (Redmond, US) and Amazon (Cambridge, UK), where I worked on conversational agents grounded in speaker/listener and question answering, respectively. The topic of my PhD is modelling documents that contain text along with numerical information, such as number, numerals, and tables, with applications in error detection, error correction, and text prediction for clinical and scientific data. My research has been presented at the EMNLP and ACL conferences.I have been a teaching assistant and senior teaching assistant for various modules at UCL, such as natural language processing, mobile app design, object-oriented programming, etc. I have collaborated with spoken word artist Zena Edwards to organised the public engagement project \"Human Code - Computer Tongue\", which was a series of workshops, invited talks, and performances for teaching about neural networks through algorithmically generated poetry.I hold a MSc in Computational Statistics and Machine Learning from UCL and a BSc/MSc diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. I have been in the roles of research associate, research assistant, and software engineer at the Forecasting and Strategy Unit (FSU) at NTUA. My work in time-series forecasting has been published in conferences and journals, including the International Journal of Forecasting.I code mainly in Python, including Pytorch and Tensorflow for neural networks, and have been involved with clinical and healthcare applications (supervised student projects; PhD funded by the Farr Institute of Health Informatics Research).
