Guardian Scholars Coordinator
Jun 2025 — Present · Costa Mesa, CA, US
As the Guardian Scholars Program Coordinator at Orange Coast College, I am dedicated to supporting and empowering current and former foster youth in their pursuit of higher education. My work centers on providing holistic, trauma-informed support that addresses the unique barriers foster youth face both inside and outside the classroom.I provide individualized case management and assist students with navigating college systems, including applications for FAFSA/CADAA, Chafee Grants, EOPS, and NextUp. My role involves ensuring students receive critical resources such as financial aid support, textbook assistance, transportation help, food security resources, and access to emergency funds and housing navigation.Beyond one-on-one support, I design and facilitate workshops focused on life skills, financial literacy, academic success, and wellness—all tailored to the foster youth experience. I also coordinate events that foster community and belonging, recognizing how vital peer connection and a supportive environment are to student persistence and success.A key part of my role is advocacy—working closely with campus partners like Financial Aid, Counseling, EOPS, Basic Needs, and community agencies to build strong networks of support. I also ensure compliance with eligibility policies and foster youth rights, helping students navigate systems that weren’t designed with them in mind.My mission is simple: to create a space where foster youth are not only supported but celebrated. I believe in the power of education as a tool for stability, empowerment, and generational change. My work is rooted in the belief that with the right support, foster youth can and will thrive.
