ABOUT GEORGIA LAGOUDAS
I\'m science policy expert and bioengineer interested in tackling important problems, especially at the intersection of biotechnology, health, and sustainability. I serve as Senior Fellow and faculty at the Brown University School of Public Health\'s Pandemic Center, based in DC. I lead policy initiatives on clean indoor air to reduce disease transmission. I was previously at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, where I was responsible for leading implementation of the Bioeconomy Executive Order that President Biden signed in September 2022. I also launched the White House Initiative on Clean Indoor Air, in partnership with the Covid Response Team.I entered policy as a Congressional Science and Engineering Policy Fellow, working in the Senate on climate and biotechnology policy. During my fellowship, I wrote three bills, one of which eventually became law in the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 (\"Bioeconomy Research & Development Act\"). I have expertise in international biosafety and biosecurity policy, having spent time in the Department of State Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation. Prior to coming to DC, I worked at the Innovation Center of DSM, a multinational company that creates products in nutrition, health, and materials. I led biotech projects at the intersection of microbiome, animal agriculture, and sustainability, doing large-scale sequencing and data analysis to create products to improve animal gut health and reduce the use of antibiotics for growth promotion in animals.I completed my Ph.D. at MIT and the Broad Institute. I built microfluidic technologies to analyze microbial genomes at extremely high-throughput, and I used DNA sequencing to study antimicrobial resistance. I coached and mentored dozens of students, and I served as a Communication Fellow at MIT. I enjoy the mountains, cycling, trail running, and serving as a NOLS Instructor.
