Arup is firm of designers, engineers, planners and business consultants providing diverse services across the world. As part of the Sustainable Consulting (SC) group I am involved with the sustainability appraisal of masterplans and new developments within the UK and abroad (China and the Middle East). I am also involved with corporate carbon management projects and more technical life cycle analysis (LCA) work. • In 2008 the Government along with the Strategic Forum for Construction set an ambitious carbon reduction target of 15% for the UK construction sector. I have been engaged with contractors and trade associations in developing an Action Plan for the construction sector how best to respond to this carbon target.• Seconded to the Carbon Trust (a government agency setup to help the UK move towards a low carbon economy) I am part of a project management team on the Marine Energy Accelerator programme. The aim of this programme is to improve the cost-competitiveness and growth of wave and tidal energy through research and investment. • Measured Allied London’s (a UK real estate development company) carbon emissions and presented the outcomes in line with the WBCSD’s GHG Protocol. Allied London was advised on various carbon offsetting scheme available in terms of cost and quality assurance.• Carried out a life cycle analysis (LCA) for a new type of flooring based on recycled plaster, and compared its embodied CO2 emissions (raw material extraction, adhesives, transport, energy and waste) to typical concrete-based flooring.• I have also been involved with more strategic work such as the Thames Gateway Low Carbon Feasibility study. We were asked by the CLG to examine the feasibility of achieving different levels of reduction in carbon dioxide emissions in the Thames Gateway between 2005 and 2050.
