About George Marriner Maull

Emmy-nominated conductor, public television and radio host George Marriner Maull, artistic director of The Discovery Orchestra, https://discoveryorchestra.org/, believes everyone can become a virtuoso music listener. His formal music education began in 1956 at St. Peter\'s Choir School in Philadelphia under Harold Wells Gilbert. He attended Philadelphia\'s Lincoln High School studying with vocalist Laura Giamo, pianist Saul Feinberg and Philadelphia Orchestra violist, Irving Segall. At the University of Louisville he studied with Louisville Orchestra concertmaster Paul Kling. After his sophomore year he was engaged as a violist by The Louisville Orchestra and studied conducting with Louisville Orchestra music director Jorge Mester. In 1972, he was appointed conductor of the Louisville Ballet, music director of the Louisville Singers, Heritage Theater of Louisville, and assistant conductor and chorus master of the Kentucky Opera, making his Kentucky Opera conducting debut in 1974. Moving to New York in 1975 he performed as a violist with the American Symphony Orchestra under Sergiu Comissiona, Brooklyn Philharmonic under Lukas Foss, Opera Orchestra of New York under Eve Queler and studied at The Juilliard School with composers Robert Smolensky and Lawrence Widdoes. Appointed assistant conductor of the Opera Orchestra of New York in 1977, he received a fellowship in 1978 from the League of American Orchestras to study with Austrian conductor Richard Johannes Lert. The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra engaged him as assistant conductor for the 1979-80 season. Other posts include: music director, New Jersey Youth Symphony (19••••97); Plainfield Symphony (19••••87); Philharmonic Orchestra of New Jersey (19••••06) and artistic director, The Discovery Orchestra (2006 - present). He has led concerts at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and in Belgium, The Netherlands, England, Poland, Hungary and Romania. The Discovery Orchestra\'s educational productions distributed by American Public Television have earned 3 Emmy Nominations and 10 Telly Awards. The program first aired on Saturday, September 8, 2018 and is broadcast on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month at 7:30pm ET on The Classical Network, 89.1 FM in New Jersey, and may be heard on line worldwide at wwfm.org.
