About George Lountos
For a detailed summary of research, please visit https://ccr.cancer.gov/george-t-lountosHighly skilled and accomplished structural biologist experienced in protein crystallography, cryogenic electron microscopy, structure-function analysis of proteins, protein expression and purification, and structure-based drug design. My research involves collaboration with multidisciplinary scientific teams consisting of medicinal chemists, biochemists, cell biologists, and biophysical chemists with the goal of discovering inhibitors of validated drug targets in cancer, infectious disease, and bacteria. My published papers have been featured on the cover of the journals Nucleic Acids Research, ACS Biochemistry, RSC Chemical Science, RSC Chemical Biology and Chemical Biology & Drug Design.I also posses highly effective communication skills with experience in oral presentations at national and regional conferences, preparation of manuscripts for journal submission, and generation of detailed technical reports. I also have been frequently invited to serve as a subject-matter expert peer reviewer for several scientific journals and the NIH Chemical Biology Consortium.I am an independently-driven leader who has served in leadership roles with the American Crystallographic Association (ACA) and the NCI Postdoctoral Fellows Committee.I have been involved in the organization of scientific sessions at the ACA National Meeting for several years. I currently serve as the Chair of the ACA Biological Macromolecules Interest Group as well as the Co-Chair of the NIH Structural Biology Methods Scientific Interest Group where I also serve as the current Editor of bi-weekly newsletter which highlights current research accomplishments at the NIH.Specialties: PCR, Gateway recombinational cloning, protein expression and purification, use of solubulity enhancing tags in protein expression, affinity-tag purification, crystallization robotics, mass spectrometry, FPLC, protein construct design for crystallization, synchrotron X-ray data collection and processing, MAD & SAD phasing, molecular replacement, structure determination of protein-inhibitor complexes, preparation of grids for cryoEM data collection, cryoEM data processing using CyroSPARC and SIMPLE.
