   The Farm to School program, a venture of the New York City Department of Education/Office of Food and Nutrition Services, connects school and community gardens with school lunch meals. Though seasonal harvest events and educational activities, the programs goals include-supporting instruction on gardening and the local food system-raising awareness of the benefits of school gardening-influencing healthy food choices-increasing student consumption of fresh and locally-grown produce.Many schools use garden produce on a semi-regular basis and feature it on their salad bars. School gardens include urban farms, community gardens, schoolyards, rooftops, outdoor raised beds, classroom grow boxes, green walls and hydroponics.School Food kitchen teams prepare the produce grown in to such items as kale salad, fresh herbed vinaigrettes and roasted root vegetables, giving the students a chance to taste what they have grown and learn more about the food cycle as a continuous journey.
