As the Senior Geomatics Engineer for upstream at Suncor I am heavily involved in all aspects of geospatial data at Suncor, from working with surveyors to analysis, engineering, QA/QC, and visualization. This often means understanding and explaining- When, where, and how data was obtained- The context, accuracy (or lack thereof), and history surrounding that data- How to best work with geospatial data to make it useful and useable- Customizing software like Blue Marble Geographic Calculator, Safe Software FME, or ESRI ArcGIS to use custom coordinate systems and transformations. I also function as the subject matter expert on- Geodesy and coordinate systems (converting all types of data to and from custom coordinate systems and formats)- Geospatial data gathering (GNSS, total stations, remote sensing, etc.)- Geodata Processing with FME, python, and Global Mapper- Geospatial Data Analysis and visualization- FME, Global Mapper, and Geographic Calculator -Specific GIS processes and tools I work with a diverse array of different teams (having been involved in almost every upstream project at some point). This often involves holding learning sessions on various geospatial issues and concepts for technical and non-technical teams. I also advise on the acquisition of satellite and aerial imagery, LiDAR, GIS, and other geodetic software.
