About Genese Grill
I am a writer, scholar, and translator living in Plainfield, Vermont. My book of essays on the tension between spirit and matter, Portals: Reflections on the Spirit in Matter (Splice, 2021), was the runner up for the 2020 Gournay Book Prize. Essays in the collection have been published in The Georgia Review, The Missouri Review, Rupture Magazine, and Numero Cinq; three have been nominated for The Pushcart Prize and one was a finalist in the Best American Essays series. One was the winner of the Jeffrey E. Smith Editor\'s Prize for Non-Fiction in 2016. My scholarly book, The World as Metaphor in Robert Musil\'s The Man without Qualities: Possibility as Reality, was published by Camden House in 2012 and appeared in paperback in Spring, 2022. I am the translator of Thought Flights, selected small prose of Robert Musil (Contra Mundum, 2015), Musil\'s Unions (Contra Mundum, 2019), and Theater Symptoms: Robert Musil\'s Plays and Writings on Drama (2020, Contra Mundum), Robert Musil: Literature and Politics (by Klaus Amann and Robert Musil)(2022, Contra Mundum), and co-translator, with Samantha Rose Hill, of What Remains: The Collected Poetry of Hannah Arendt (2025). You can read about my work as scholar, translator, and writer in this interview in The Los Angeles Review of Books: https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/approaching-new-consciousnesses-a-conversation-with-genese-grill/
