ABOUT GEMEL A JOSEPH
Dr. Joseph is a passionate science educator and communicator with a strong foundation in biology, policy, and intellectual property. She earned her Ph.D. in Biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where her research focused on the role of sodium transporters in the adaptation, virulence, and infection mechanisms of the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. She also holds a B.S. in Biology from the University of the Virgin Islands, where she conducted undergraduate research optimizing DNA extraction methods for the white mangrove species to support future genetic studies.With over four years of experience in patent law, Dr. Joseph has a deep understanding of the intersection between scientific innovation and legal frameworks. Currently, she teaches biology to English learners at a high school in Prince William County Public Schools, where she combines her scientific expertise with a commitment to equitable education.She is driven by a strong passion for science communication, education, and policy, and aims to transition into an administrative role where she can influence science curriculum development and policy at a systemic level. Dr. Joseph is especially interested in creating inclusive, scientifically rigorous learning environments that empower diverse student populations and support informed public engagement with science.
