ABOUT GELTRUDE MINGRONE
Geltrude Mingrone, MD, PhD, is an internationally recognized expert in obesity, diabetes, and metabolic surgery, ranked among the World’s Top 2% of Scientists. She was a pioneer in showing that bariatric surgery can induce remission of type 2 diabetes even before major weight loss occurs, and led the first randomized trial comparing metabolic surgery with medical therapy, published in NEJM with long-term follow-up in The Lancet. Her research has uncovered mechanisms linking the upper gut, ER stress, GRP78, and insulin resistance, and she discovered the role of dicarboxylic acids as alternative energy nutrients. She is Professor at the Catholic University in Rome and King’s College London, a member of The Lancet Commission on Obesity, and contributed to the ADA–EASD diabetes treatment guidelines.
