ABOUT GAVIN WILSON

For ten years, I built, educated, trained, and managed Wattpad’s Ambassador (volunteer) program, taking the global team from around 60 to over 500, building a diverse, talented, and world-spanning group of amazing people. This in turn has made me the internal champion for our incredible community and helped me to help Wattpad put its people at the heart of everything we do. After managing not only our Ambassadors, but also our Contests, Acquisition and Development, and Writer Comms and Creators teams, I\'ve now taken on the position of International Lead. My focus is the Wattpad international community and advocating for our readers and writers across the world. During my time at Wattpad, I have worked cross-functionally to help build policy, process and training to ensure we have a consistent approach to moderation and user issues, have been involved in the creation and implementation of content guidelines, and have championed equity and inclusion for all our users, and put community at the heart of what we do. Over many years, we have worked steadily towards a culture of trust, transparency, empathy, and safety on the platform, scaling our user base by more than ten times while I have been on the team. Experience in two markedly different industries has given me a broad view of business, and lessons learned from both have stood me in good stead as I built not only numbers in the team, but the structure, teaching, and processes required to support the Ambassador program as it grew and flourished alongside our ever-growing online Community. We constantly aspire to grow new talent, and we work closely with our Trust and Safety, Copyright and Support teams to ensure the community is a safe and welcoming space for all Wattpad users, no matter where they live. I’m agile, creative, empathetic, and community driven. I will always put people first, and by doing that I’ve found everything else aligns neatly as we progress. Building trust is not easy, but it is essential in a community and I tend to work on the premise that we do what is right, rather than what is easy. Constant daily involvement with a passionate and diverse community is something that has changed my working life irrevocably for the better, and I will continue to strive to help others change their lives for the better too.
