About Gavin Giardino
I am a graduate of Stonehill College with a B.S. degree in Biochemistry. I am currently a PhD candidate in organic chemistry with experience in polymer chemistry at Boston College under the guidance of Dr. Jia Niu. I have expertise in small molecule synthesis, metathesis catalyst design, and the construction of metathesis degradeable polymers. My interests lie in the synthesis of potent novel small molecules and polymers with potential applications in pharmaceutical and delivery science.

PhD with Dr. Jia Niu• Designed and synthesized small molecule model systems, and studied their ring closing metathesis efficiency• Executed the synthesis of self-immolative polymers capable of degradation by metathesis reactions• Selectively tuned depolymerization products to generate either fluorescent or non-fluorescent heterocyclic small molecules• Synthesized novel ruthenium metathesis catalysts with clickable thiol maleimide handles for heterogeneous anchoring• Improved polymerization of low strain cyclic monomers yielding high molecular weight and low dispersity polymers• Collaborated to utilize lignin oligomers from photocatalysis, and constructed imine based dynamic polymer networks • Mentored three undergraduate students in the synthesis of novel NHC ligands and purification of lignin biomass
