WORK HISTORY
Technical Change Lead @Transpower New Zealand
Wellington, NZ
Transpower New Zealand Limited (TPNZ) is the state-owned enterprise responsible for electric power transmission in New Zealand. It performs two major functions in the New Zealand electricity market. As the owner of the National Grid, it provides the infrastructure of electric power transmission that allows consumers to have access to generation from a wide range of sources, and enables competition in the wholesale electricity market; as System Operator it manages the real-time operation of the grid and the physical operation of the electricity market. My role as Technical Change Lead is primarily project delivery focused. I provide technical advice to the project manager, test manager and/or business for matters relating to the development and delivery of projects. I oversee the implementation of application architectures using automation within these projects and lead the prioritization of development and delivery tasks whilst driving the project from a technical perspective. I provide technical leadership, find gaps and issues and ensure they are understood and resolved by the project to meet timelines, budget and scope.

ABOUT GARY WARD
I’ve spent over 30 years in Information Technology, and while I’ve held leadership and management roles, my true passion has always been the technical side—solving infrastructure problems and building smart, reliable systems. In recent years, my focus has zeroed in on infrastructure automation—using tools like Ansible, Puppet, and cloud-native provisioning solutions to streamline deployment and configuration. At Transpower, I’m currently developing Ansible playbooks and roles as part of their infrastructure-as-code strategy. Before that, I was with the Ministry of Social Development, where I built a fully automated deployment and configuration pipeline for their secure website access management platform using Python and Fabric2. At Inland Revenue, I led DevOps efforts to automate the upgrade of their legacy MyIR IBM WebSphere Portal Server with Ansible.Across all these roles, a recurring issue I’ve seen is the lack of investment in automation. Too often, organisations overlook the long-term value of building infrastructure and deploying applications in a way that is fast, reliable, and repeatable. This leads to fragile systems, missed deadlines, and unnecessary costs—problems that could be avoided with a stronger focus on delivery methods, not just outcomes.I’m most motivated when working with teams that value both what they’re delivering and how it’s delivered. That “how” is where automation shines—and where I bring the most value.
