ABOUT GARY SMITH

I am an ambitious and confident person who is always looking for a challenge that will help broaden my knowledge and progress with my railway career.I have been with Network Rail for nearly 13 years. Within this time, my positions have included:Technical Officer - where I learnt extensive surveying techniques from manual surveys to going out with Tampers and Stoneblowers to deliver designs for EPS tilting trains.Senior Technical Officer - from this promotion, not only did I continue to carry out OTM activities and conduct Amberg surveys for OTM designs, but I carried out such duties as level 1, 2 and 3 stresses for the LNW-South route, monitoring regime surveys such as clearance, rail depth/corrosion, side wear, asset management, SO54 and Amber Trolley. I also attended trace reviews/track quality meetings and planned in the technical work to be carried out.ATG (Absolute Track Geometry) Designer - where I had to create complex plain line and S&C maintenance designs from the surveys the technical teams completed. These had to comply with the TAD for the WCML along with other criteria such as Gauging (when designing through platforms and tunnels) and OLE, ensuring their assets are not impacted through our design work. I also had to complete Stoneblowing Window packs to ATG standards and also ATG Lite packs.Absolute Track Geometry Engineer - where I led and managed the Design Team, ensuring the designs the designers create are compliant and sign them off. In this role, not only do I have to manage the workload effectively and efficiently, but I have also learnt management of people skills and also HR processes.Senior Engineer (Technical Authority)- working within the track and S&C team where I am involved in leading and being a part of various projects that help innovate and change the way NWR operates from a technical point of view ensuring a more effective and efficient railway infrastructure.Within this time, I have also attained a BEng (2:1 with honours) in Applied Engineering at Warwick University; where i undertook modules in Project Management and Leadership, Logistics, Advance Quality Techniques, CAD/CAM, Financial Analysis and Decision Making, Industrial Processes, Asset Management etc. I am currently completing my MSc in Railway Safety and Control Systems at the University of Birmingham.
