About Gary B. Kaplan

I have been a Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine for the past 17 years and a clinician at VA Boston Healthcare System in West Roxbury. I am a board certified psychiatrist with a clinical leadership in Veterans’ mental health. I have been engaged in preclinical and clinical research in the area of the psychiatric neuroscience for over 30 years. My research has examined signaling and neuroplasticity mechanisms in opiate sensitization, withdrawal, and tolerance along with conditioned opiate reward, its extinction, and reacquisition. Such translational research defines the mechanisms related to drug relapse and defines novel therapeutic targets of interest. I have also developed models of posttraumatic stress disorder and have examined neurobiological changes and treatment approaches in this condition. My research utilized state-of-the-art methods in behavioral neuroscience, neuroanatomy, and neurochemistry to study these signaling pathways and dendritic plasticity in models of addiction and PTSD/TBI. My lab and experience provided an optimal training environment for a student interested in neuropsychiatric disorders. I have had regular federal funding of my research for the past 30 years and have trained dozens of predoctoral students and graduate students in my career at Brown Medical School and Boston University School of Medicine. My translational work used \"bench to bedside\" approaches in examining the neurobiological mechanisms of psychiatric diseases and related behavioral and neuropharmacological treatment approaches.l serve as a Professor Emeritus at Boston University School of Medicine and as an Other Significant Contributor on several grants. I serve as a mentor and teacher for BUSM and HMS faculty. I also work as a part-time clinical psychiatrist at VA Boston Healthcare System in Jamaica Plain.
