About Garrett Mooney
I\'m a senior data professional that has worked as an engineer, analyst, data scientist, and team lead. I tend to gravitate towards helping \"unblock\" others in speed, scaling, design, workflow, or methodology problems. This is part of why I loved freelance so much: I got to play in other people\'s backyards and help them do something with data that they are excited about. I\'ve come to favor simpler solutions when possible as I\'ve been first and second hand involved in prototyping hip solutions that fail to outperform simple baselines.Languages: Fluent in Python and R; conversational in Javascript, Julia, Rust, and Go.Technologies: Scikit-learn, Polars, PyTorch, JAX, Bayesian modeling, pytest, FastAPI/Flask, Docker, linux/unix, git, ci/cd, the usual cloud stuff with aws/gcp, orchestrators like airflow/kubeflow.My educational background is in econometrics but my learning path has been very circuitous: I fit my first neural network in 2012 in an Excel add-on and was very excited about neural networks for a few years but was trying to apply them to everything. I learned programming basics at night while working retail, learned lot of SQL as an analyst, and got to design a lot of cool systems involving models as a freelancer before my first official job as a data scientist. While at my first data science[tm] gig, I quickly started to miss the sense of collaboration that I had as a freelancer. I began asking coworkers about the projects they were working on and would often find ways to speed up their code or make their systems faster or more scalable and this lead me to realize that I like making the process of developing systems with models more than prototyping models in most cases. In 2021 I got offered a few Machine Learning Engineer roles but turned them down in favor of a role that was hiring for a Lead Data Science[tm] role where I would have the opportunity to lead younger folks, work on Bayesian problems, and focus on causality problems. This definition shifted quickly so I am back to looking for engineering roles where I can focus on helping folks develop simple, scalable systems that use models to solve fun technical problems, especially if they are probabilistic and/or causal in nature. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have a problem that you think that I might be able to help with!
