About Garrett Black

What I did: 1: Experienced leader, analyst and CAIA charter holder, focused on private financial markets, who has been cited in Bloomberg, CNBC, SiliconBeat, Inc.com and more 2: Founding member of PitchBook Editorial, growing the department from fewer than 10 to nearly 200 members from 2013 onward, helping establish world-class teams of editors, designers, analysts, reporters and more 3: Devised multiple strategies for growing research and content monetization to produce business units like Media Sales at PitchBook as well, while also producing insightful and innovative research ideas such as the Venture Ecosystem series, wearables research in the first PitchBook analyst note, etc. What I\'m up to now (short version): 1: Working with clients in bespoke methodologies, content strategy, unique and original research requests, and more 2: Generating millions of dollars of recognized revenue across a team of three (with data support) 3: Leading, mentoring, and pushing forward analytical boundaries with a unique toolkit of analytical modes, knowledge sets and context acquisition Context: Drawing on my education and research in biochemistry, computational finance and economics, I currently lead a custom research team at PitchBook in the production of unique market research in collaboration with clients. Typically, these reports analyze trends in private equity, venture capital and M&A, as well as select niche industries ranging from biotechnology to healthcare services. This bespoke research service generates millions of dollars per year and involves close collaboration with data analysts, designers, multiple types of clients ranging from law firms to lobbying groups to limited partners to data room creators. The research process often involves devising a unique methodology and/or other criteria with a client, or directly for a client, to look at specific markets in different ways. Then, depending on the type of project, we work with data analysts to pull the most relevant datasets (again, identified by my team and I), and commence writing research to predetermined specifications. At times, content and creative strategy is necessary to envision the final product along with the client, as well as negotiations and/or deliberation upon what the target audience truly wants (for example, brokering with a lobbying firm upon the most accurate studies done on the effects of antitrust actions and platforms\' efficacy). All of this is what produces 60+ unique, high-value custom research pieces per year.
