ABOUT GABRIEL SMITH

I am a government affairs and advocacy professional focused on building and mobilizing national networks of advocates to engage policymakers and advance industry priorities. In my current role as Legislative Affairs Manager at the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO), I lead grassroots and grasstops advocacy initiatives that activate housing professionals across the country to engage with federal policymakers. Through targeted advocacy campaigns and member engagement strategies, I have helped mobilize more than advocates to send over messages to Congress and the White House. I also help lead NAHRO’s annual Capitol Hill Day, coordinating one of the organization’s largest advocacy events. Our most recent Hill Day brought 559 advocates from 45 states and territories to Washington to conduct 295 meetings with congressional offices, engaging 289 Members of Congress across both parties. In addition, I represent NAHRO in national housing and community development coalitions advocating for programs such as CDBG, HOME, and LIHTC, and I launched NAHRO Votes, a nonpartisan civic engagement initiative designed to expand voter participation among residents served by public housing agencies. My work centers on connecting members, communities, and policymakers to ensure federal policy decisions reflect the needs of the people and industries they affect. Key focus areas include: • Grassroots and grasstops advocacy campaigns • Capitol Hill advocacy events and congressional engagement • Coalition advocacy and policy strategy • Member mobilization and advocacy training • Federal appropriations and housing policy
