Notre Dame, IN, US

I work as a legal assistant for the Notre Dame Law School Exoneration Justice Clinic (NDEJC) in the new Program for the Defense of Mexican Nationals in Criminal Matters in the United States (PDM). The NDEJC was awarded a $3 million grant from the Mexican government to implement the PDM which has the central goal of addressing wrongful convictions in the United States for Mexican nationals who are particularly vulnerable given a multitude of factors such as language barriers and immigration status. This grant is the largest ever received by a Notre Dame Law School Clinic and is an unprecedented collaboration between a foreign government and American law school to represent its nationals. In this role, I maintain a case management system to track case progress and case files, and manage new requests for legal representation. Additionally, I complete legal research, assist with document proofreading, and manage clerical tasks including PDM correspondence with current and potential clients, the Mexican government, and Mexican consulates in the United States. Finally, I oversee all PDM spending, including processing of invoices and expense reports, handling client payments, and preparing grant reports.
