I am a Senior Actuarial Analyst on the Strategic Risk team in Corporate Actuarial. Much of my work involves monitoring Definity’s exposure to catastrophe risk for the business to take actions to limit the risk.Projects:Exposure Database- Database is refreshed by my team each month; data from certain brokers consistently arrives one month late. Wrote SAS code to load expected renewal policies from one such broker into database to combat issue and wrote SAS code to check accuracy of load up once actual data is received.Earthquake Risk Monitoring, focusing on British Columbia- Produce a monthly report to compare actual BC earthquake PML (Probable Maximum Loss) to financial resources available. Communicate results via email, highlighting segments which drove results- Grouped all FSAs in BC into zones by earthquake risk using clustering technique in Python. Presented results with my team to executives from various departments.Flood Risk Monitoring- Overhauled process to create flood monitoring report by transferring majority of process from Excel to Tableau. New working Excel file <1% size of old files; Tableau enabled me to create easy-to-refresh deep dive analyses of results.Wildfire Risk Monitoring- Working closely with climate and geospatial professionals to assess wildfire exposure relative to industry at high level of geographic granularity.Financial condition testing (FCT)- Helped to prepare Climate Change Adverse Scenario by performing simulations on historical claims data.Accomplishments- Earthquake risk zones adopted throughout the business, including in underwriting and actuarial work- Received uniformly positive feedback from direct leader and others, highlighting both strong technical and soft skills; specifically, attention to detail, communication, willingness to learn new concepts, and looking at novel solutions to answer questions.

ABOUT GABRIEL SUSKIN
I am passionate about finding solutions to complex problems and specifically enjoy using mathematics and statistics, my main areas of strength, as tools in solving problems. Aligning with my interests, I decided to pursue an Actuarial career, where I could apply statistical theory to real-world situations while balancing business insights to solve problems. I chose the Property and Casualty (P&C) insurance route because of the substantial amount of innovation present in the field, and my interest in both the type and wide variety of risks involved in P&C insurance.I currently work as a Senior Actuarial Analyst at Definity (the parent company of Economical Insurance) on the Strategic Risk team in Corporate Actuarial. My projects mostly involve catastrophe risk modeling and monitoring. I am pursuing FCAS (Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society) and FCIA (Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries) designations, and have so far achieved my ACAS (Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society) designation in December 2024 and in addition have passed CAS Exams 7 and 8.I am also invested in making an impact in my community, beginning volunteer work as a young teenager. From 20••••18, I was a Volunteer Counselor at the London Interfaith Peace Camp, with increasing responsibility over time. Throughout university, I was a member of the UWO Rotaract club, affiliated to Rotary, and served as the VP Finance in my third and fourth years. A key goal is to use my strengths to best benefit my community.I welcome opportunities to connect and network with industry professionals in the P&C Actuarial field, other Actuarial fields, those who share a similar passion for giving back to their community, and any students who would like to reach out.
