About Frederick L. Klein

I was a commercial real estate partner at DLA Piper in Washington DC, where we represented domestic and off-shore real estate investors in projects throughout the US, including banks, life companies, universities, debt funds, private equity funds, publicly traded real estate investment trusts, investors and developers. I helped clients on the sale, acquisition and enforcement of distressed loans, and on complex loan workouts. Our team represented several German investment funds (and other non-US investors) on real estate investments in several major markets. I negotiated ground leases, air rights agreements and other complex development documents, and often represented families on long-term ground leases and other real estate investments. I am a Fellow of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers and I have lectured in the real estate program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and in the business school at Georgetown University. I served 2 terms as general counsel of the Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate (AFIRE). I\'m most proud of having trained many young real estate lawyers who have had successful careers in real estate law and business. I cherish my continued professional relationships, both with my DLA Piper colleagues and with clients and friends in the real estate industry, many of whom I have known for decades. I appreciate the many opportunities DLA Piper created for me. I was fortunate to have been trained by some of the best real estate and business lawyers in the business, including Stephen Huttler, Sheldon Weisel, Marty Krall, Ted Rogers, John Engel, Les Nicholson and others. I spent my entire legal career with my friend Jay Epstien - proving that the whole is far greater than the sum of the parts. I\'m proudly married to Jill Klein, and we have two sons, Max and Sam, and a daughter, Susie. I am an enthusiastic golfer and a devoted fan of the Washington Nationals and Duke University football and basketball. I serve on the Board of Regents of The Mercersburg Academy; the Board of Directors of the Children\'s Law Center; and the Board of Directors of The National Theatre Foundation in Washington DC (where I am also the general counsel). I am an adjunct professor at Georgetown Law, where I teach real estate documents and negotiations. I love my town (which will hopefully become the 51st state).
