HeLab, Biomedical Functional Imaging and Neuroengineering Labratory, Department of Biomedical EngineeringThis project aims to address limitations in motor imagery (MI) faced in current brain-computer interface (BCI) experiments. At present, MI is limited to the participant imagining the movement of the hands, feet, or tongue. In doing so, a participant may be able to move a cursor on a screen by imagining the movement of one of these few body parts. A proposed solution is to expand these experimentation options to other body parts, such as the elbow, to allow for a greater degree of freedom in running BCI experiments. Potential practical applications of this work include prosthetic use, in patients with motor impairment or paralysis, but also in the general public, in general motor improvement, or other devices, such as smartphones, computers, or gaming consoles.
