ABOUT FRANK ZHU
A leading technical expert and innovator in process energy efficiency and sustainability, with significant contributions in process modeling, mathematical optimization, and engineering principles. Known for bridging theory and practice through a multidisciplinary approach, addressing challenges in process performance optimization, asset management, energy transition, emission benchmarking and reduction, as well as industrial data analytics and digitalization. Recently developed a strategic method for energy transition and decarbonization roadmap generation through technology selection based on economics, climate change impact, and societal benefits.Recipient of the AIChE National Energy Sustainability Award for pioneering novel process design and operation optimization methodologies, achieving significant energy savings in refining and petrochemical industries. The work is detailed in “Hydroprocessing for Clean Energy” and “Efficient Petrochemical Processes”,• Acted as a Sustainability Subject Expert and Data Science Application Supervisor; the theories and applications are detailed in \"Analytics and Digitalization for Smart Plant Performance.\"• Developed the Operation Optimization Methodology using Key Indicators (KI), integrated with process and energy optimization, enabling benchmarking, monitoring, and continuous process improvements.• Successfully implemented this method at BP Petroleum (20••••07), saving $120 MM/year in energy through operational changes, workflow streamlining, reliability improvements, and asset management, with broad industry adoption globally. The methodology is detailed in \"Energy and Process Optimization for Process Industries.\"• Pioneered Molecular Analysis and Optimization for Process Synthesis, with impactful publications (Zhu, IE & CR, 2018; Zhu & Murad, CEP, 2020; Xu & Zhu, Chem. Eng. Sci, 2022).• Applied this methodology to numerous projects, achieving 20-30% energy savings in typical chemical plants, equating to $20-30 million in annual energy cost savings with widespread industry applications.
