Duties include assisting individuals with criminal records correct errors on their New York State rap sheets and understand the collateral consequences of having a criminal history as well as their legal rights and obligations when seeking employment. I currently undertake this work through the Rikers Island Discharge Enhancement (RIDE) program. I specifically work at Rikers Island Single Stop (RISS) assisting clients obtain their official criminal history or “rap sheets” from the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). I review clients\' criminal histories and work collaboratively with the Office of Court Administration (OCA), the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), the New York State Department of Parole (DOP), the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS), NYPD and various DA\'s Offices to correct errors and change policies. Besides counseling clients on how to better understand the collateral consequences of their criminal histories, I also teach them how to present themselves on job interviews. I do this all with the goal of making my clients more able to obtain gainful employment in order to reduce recidivism. Additionally, I give trainings to people with histories of drug and alcohol dependency and people living with HIV/AIDS, various social service agencies (including the Veterans Administration and NYS Department of Labor), and prospective employers about laws of confidentiality and housing/job-related discrimination. Also, I have served as a Program Assistant for Canisus College, Director of the Transitional Services (Pre-Release) Program for NYS Corrections and Community Supervision, and Coordinator of Residential Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program in NYS DOCCS.
