I am a molecular parasitologist with a background in genetics and I am working on protozoan parasites that are of veterinary / public health importance (Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Babesia and Sarcocystis species). My research interests focus on host-parasite interactions, diagnostics development and disease control strategies, in order to identify means of mitigating the impact of protozoan parasites on animal and public health. My work involves studying the protozoan parasite infections of animals to understand how these parasites interact with their host, how they cause disease and how the immune system can control their infection. I employ molecular methodologies, such as PCR, satellite markers analysis, sequencing in order to detect, quantify, speciate and type protozoan parasites. These tools allow me to study the population complexities, dynamics, transmission routes and survival strategies of these parasites to identify the most effective interventions that target the parasites when they are most susceptible. My work also focuses on drinking water and water catchments in order to identify the most important sources of these protozoan parasites and I investigate strategies to improve drinking water safety.
