About Frank Giraldo
My goal is to develop physics-based models for solving complex systems of nonlinear equations more accurately and efficiently. I seek to develop cutting-edge numerical methods and computational tools for real-world applications, primarily in weather and ocean modeling. To this end, we are exploring scientific machine learning to improve the accuracy and efficiency of these computational proxies for natural systems. Recently, I have been focusing on two interesting problems:(1) space weather which requires solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with modifications to handle variable composition atmospheres,(2) ocean modeling which requires solving the multilayer shallow water equations, and (3) fully differentiability of the models in order to exploit implicit time-stepping, the development of adjoints for data assimilation and gradients for machine learning. The first project involves a wealth of interesting problems in mathematical physics, the second project leverages advanced numerical methods (e.g, entropy-stable DG and space-time DG), GPU hardware, and neural networks for developing new parameterizations, and the third project provides the glue for building digital twins.A list of my publications can be found at: http://frankgiraldo.wixsite.com/mysite/publicationsThe bulk of my work involves topics summarized in my book published by Springer and can be found here:
