About Frank Abe

I\'m lead author and scriptwriter of a graphic novel,\"WE HEREBY REFUSE: Japanese American Resistance to Wartime Incarceration\"(Chin Music Press, 2021). This was my first foray into dramatic writing for the page and builds upon the foundation of my non-fiction work. I wrote and directed the award-winning documentary \"Conscience and the Constitution\"(PBS, on the largest organized resistance to the camps. I won an American Book Award as co-editor of \"JOHN OKADA: The Life & Rediscovered Work of the Author of No-No Boy\"(University of Washington Press, 2018), in which I authored the first-ever biography of Okada and traced the inspirations for his novel. I\'m currently co-editing \"The Penguin Book of the Literature of Japanese American Incarceration\"(Penguin Classics, fall 2023). I\'ve contributed to Ishmael Reed\'s Konch Magazine, The Bloomsbury Review, Case Western Reserve Law Review, Amerasia Journal, and others. I blog at Resisters.com. I started on this path by helping produce the first-ever “Day of Remembrance” in Seattle in 1978 with Frank Chin and Lawson Inada, inventing a new tradition to reclaim the history of wartime imprisonment and publicly dramatize the case for redress. I was an original member of Frank’s Asian American Theater Workshop in San Francisco and studied acting at the American Conservatory Theater, with a BA in theater directing from UC Santa Cruz. By day, I\'ve served as a reporter for KIRO Newsradio in Seattle and as communications director for King County Executives Gary Locke and Dow Constantine, and the King County Council.
