About Francisco J. Mayorga
Yale-trained economist with a proven track record in education and banking. Highly qualified in board memberships, his main fields of interest are Banking, Corporate Finance, Applied Artificial Intelligence, and Academic Planning. He currently serves on the Board of The World Bank as Senior Advisor of the Chair of Central America, Spain, Mexico and Venezuela. He also participates in the Boards of IFC, IDA and MIGA, Washington, DC. From 2011 to 2021 he served on the Boards of the Inter American Development Bank, IDB Invest and IDB Lab, in Washington DC. Previously he served on the Board of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), governor of the Central Bank of Nicaragua and chairman of the Board of Banco del Café de Nicaragua. Alongside his banking career, doctor Mayorga has also led an active academic life. He was a faculty member of INCAE for twenty years, and has taught in several major MBA programs in Latin America. His main teaching areas are Corporate Finance, Financial Data Analytics and Managerial Applications of Artificial Intelligence. He is a former Rector of UPB (Bolivia), which he led for three years to advance to the standards of a world-class university. Under doctor Mayorga’s leadership UPB began an international accreditation process, earning the BGA certification in 2024. At the same time, UPB was awarded the ISO 21001 academic quality certification, while several careers were certified in the ARCU-SUR (Mercosur) academic accreditation process. In 2023 America Economia ranked the UPB Olave School of Business among the top 10 in Latin America. The British rating agency, QS, awarded UPB four stars, including five in academic quality. QS ranked UPB the top private university in Bolivia, and positioned it among the top 20 universities in Latin America. UPB has 4900 undergraduate students in 20 careers, 1600 in graduate programs and a 560 faculty (72 PhD) in three campuses: La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz. In 2023 Doctor Mayorga founded the Latin American Artificial Intelligence Network (Red de Inteligencia Artificial Latinoamericana, RIAL). This space for academic collaboration has now more than 250 members from over 130 universities. In 2022 he was president of the Midwest Association of Latin American Studies, in the United States. His academic interests currently focus on strategies to adjust higher education and corporate management training to the rise of generative artificial intelligence. Professionally, doctor Mayorga remains interested in the changing environment of international and development banking.
