ABOUT FRANCIS TAMAN

As a member of the enforcement, realization, and insolvency team at Bishop & McKenzie, I bring a broad background to the enforcement of both secured and unsecured loans. Having acted as a solicitor, I understand the dynamics and intricacies of the acquisition and financing of commercial properties. This provides me with a depth of perspective during the realization process which has been valuable in sifting through the debtor’s story to reach the core enforcement issues. I have been involved in litigation resulting in a number of recent ground breaking decisions, including a successful constitutional challenge of government regulations that threatened to undermine the enforceability of high ratio mortgages, and the successful prosecution of mortgage fraud. I have also been involved in a number of insolvency matters, representing creditors, debtors and potential purchasers of assets. In addition, together with my partner Ksena Court, I co-author the Alberta Foreclosure Blog and the Alberta Insolvency Blog With offices in both Edmonton and Calgary, Bishop & McKenzie LLP has established a strong reputation for knowing and understanding Alberta’s lending market. Approaching loans as a process rather than an event, the team of lawyers at Bishop & McKenzie bring an innovative, cradle-to-grave approach to lenders’ portfolios with an eye to adding maximum value to funding, maintaining and, if necessary, realizing on a loan. Working together, the lawyers at Bishop & McKenzie share the lessons and insights learned in each phase of the process, which gives us the broadest possible perspective with respect to issues and unique situations that may arise during a lender’s relationship with their borrower.
