ABOUT FRANCESCO PETRELLA

I serve as the Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Fondazione IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori in Monza and as an Associate Professor of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Milan. My professional journey is deeply rooted in both clinical excellence and innovative research. My current research interests encompass: • Thoracic surgical oncology • Regenerative medicine • Stem cell applications in surgery Clinically, I specialize in: • Locally advanced resectable lung cancer • Mediastinal tumors • Chest wall surgery • Pleural mesothelioma • ECMO-assisted general thoracic surgery • My non-oncologic clinical interests include the surgical treatment of hyperhidrosis, pneumothorax, thoracic outlet syndrome and major thoracic trauma I pioneered the Robotic Thoracic Program at Fondazione IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori, performing the institution\'s first robotic lobectomy, thymectomy (for cancer and myasthenia), diaphragm plication, neurogenic tumor resection, super-selective ramicotomy and sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis. I have developed and patented two surgical instruments and techniques: • A personalized approach to lung metastasectomy (Petrella F et al. J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg. 2009 Jul;138(1):244-5.) • A modified Blalock clamp for pulmonary artery control during lung cancer resection (Petrella F et al. Interact Cardiovasc Thorac Surg. 2012 Mar;14(3):237-8) • A technique for complex vascular and neurogenic thoracic outlet surgery (Petrella F et al. Eur J Cardiothorac Surg. 2024 Jan 2;65(1):ezae019) Additionally, I performed a bronchoscopic autologous stem cell transplantation to treat post-resectional bronchopleural fistula (Petrella F et al. N Engl J Med. 2015 Jan 1;372(1):96-7) I contribute to the academic community as: • Associate Editor for the European Journal of Cancer Prevention • Member of the Executive Board of the European Cancer Prevention Organization (ECPO) • Member of the Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee for the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS)
