   Understanding and preventing crime requires a multidisciplinary approach. This course explores the intersection between behavioral economics, crime, incarceration, and public policy. This course uses theoretical and empirical economic tools to analyze a wide range of issues related to criminality. Topics include policing practices, crime trends, sentencing policies, race, illicit drug markets, labor markets, and income inequality. Economic concepts such as rationality, efficiency, supply, and demand are used. The course includes international and historical comparisons of enforcement techniques from both an economic efficiency framework and an ethical perspective. Topics are also explored through a public policy perspective to identify and evaluate the effectiveness of proposed reforms.
