ABOUT FRAN DARLINGTON-POLLOCK

Inequality hurts all of us. The pain is greater for those at the bottom of whatever social hierarchy they sit in, but it matters for us all. I believe we can change that. That is what drives my interests, writing and my work, spanning academia, the INGO sector and the UK social justice space. As an academic, I gained a strong foundation in understanding and measuring inequality, focussing on inequalities in health alongside wider inequalities in social and economic outcomes. It has shown me the importance of the interactions between people, place and politics as a driver of inequality, and a point of intervention (former Lecturer in Population Geography, University of Liverpool; former Lecturer in Health Geography, Queen Mary University of London; current Visiting Research Fellow, University of York).As an INGO employee, I work to bring about meaningful research partnerships that can improve programming to support those facing inequality and discrimination; strengthen engagement with research opportunities; and build capacity within the sector (Research and Evidence Advisor, Save the Children UK).In the UK social justice space, I have good experience of charity governance and the challenges facing organisations looking to drive change and combat structural inequality (Chair of The Equality Trust (former trustee)). I currently head up Greater Manchester Mayors Charity, leading our work to support those experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. We raise funds and distribute it to where it is needed across the city-region, including through ‘A Bed Every book \'Disease\', featuring in new series from Agenda Publishing: The Five Giants - A New Beveridge
