About Fred R.

Hello, Fred here. I\'m into infrastructure, I like protocols. I like that our brains act as a biological computer with some weird programming. Life feels like one big research project centered in technology. Cloud wizardry is the ultimate goal. I\'ve had a long career of studying open standards and protocols. Typically this comes in the form of open source projects like Linux and open protocols like TCP, DNS, and IPv6. Past positions have all been infrastructure-related like network engineering, Linux/server engineering and Internet communications. Converge it together with devops automation & call it cloud computing. I\'ve been a geek since I tinkered around with 6510 assembly language as a young teen. I\'m particularly fond of OSS and Linux, as well as the Internet and networking in general. I believe open standards are what drives technological innovation and plants the foundation for extreme efficiency, so that all of society may benefit. If I can tear it apart and fix it again, then I can understand it. Even as a youngster I was amazed with the ideas of magic, of slight of hand, and most of all, psychology. When you understand the machines, the tools people use, you can get inside their heads and understand them better. This aides in every field, including security. My idea of a \"geek\" is someone who is passionate about something, led my coining the term \"geexology\", studying people following their dreams and passions. These extreme hobbies can become careers, and when you really enjoy it, and have fun, it\'s perfect. Specialties: IP networking, VPNs, Linux, system administration, virtualization with Qemu/KVM. Enterprise-level internet and provider services. The open protocols like tcp/ip, dns, bgp. The stuff that runs the internet. Docker containerization. Infrastructure as code. Devops automation with ansible, terraform. Developing simple tools in golang. Security in terms of creating simple, elegant solutions that perform well but don\'t leave resources wide open. Creativity in technical projects. Asking the why.
