ABOUT FLAVIA S. RAMOS-MATTOUSSI

With over 30 years of experience in international education and development, I have dedicated my career to advancing educational opportunities and fostering collaboration across diverse global communities. As a Senior Research Associate at the Learning Systems Institute at Florida State University, I lead initiatives that enhance learning systems, policy development, and educational research worldwide. Additionally, I contribute to the design, implementation, and evaluation of international education programs.Throughout my career, I have worked extensively in multicultural, post-conflict, and developing settings, leveraging expertise in education policy, qualitative research, and program assessment. Prior to joining LSI, I directed the Assistance to Basic Education (USAID ABE-IQC) at Juarez & Associates in Washington, D.C, overseeing the implementation of large-scale education initiatives in developing countries. I have also consulted for leading organizations such as USAID, the U.S. Department of Labor, and UNICEF, conducting research and training programs across Latin America, Africa, and Asia.Beyond research and policy work, I am passionate about teaching and mentorship. I have held faculty positions at American University, George Washington University, the University of Connecticut, and the School for International Training, where I have taught and trained the next generation of education professionals. My academic contributions extend to the development and evaluation of literacy programs, higher education partnerships, and qualitative, arts-based research methodologies. As the creator of The FotoDialogo Method©, I integrate visual sociology, life histories, and participatory action research to explore educational challenges and opportunities.In addition to my scholarly work, I am a playwright, visual artist, and author. Under the name Flavia Sales, I have written and illustrated children’s books published in Brazil, reflecting my deep appreciation for multicultural storytelling and artistic expression.I hold an Ed.D. in Education Policy, Research, and Administration and an M.Ed. in International Education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, as well as a B.F.A. in Art Education from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, I bring a global perspective to my work and remain committed to creating meaningful, sustainable change in education worldwide.
